Kane, nominated for nine Oscars, emerged with only one best screenplayand "boos" could be heard whenever the film was mentioned during the ceremony. Like Kane, he was a vital, passionate figure in youth, but a sad, pathetic one at the end.
Why is this character strength so important?
For years, I have avoided writing a review of this movie, intimidated perhaps by its immense reputation. And while the anticipation of seeing a film with such overwhelming acclaim may be quite exhilarating, actually watching it is ultimately an intimidating and somewhat disappointing experience.
Even though the plot unfolds by jumping in and out of nonlinear flashbacks, it is surprisingly easy to keep track of. Then, as a reporter William Alland from the Inquirer digs into Kane's past to learn the meaning of Rosebud, the mogul's history is unraveled through a series of extended flashbacks that represent the sometimes-overlapping, non- chronological accounts of five eyewitnesses.
He meets with five different people who were important in Kane's life -- from the man who raised Kane to his second wife -- to try to understand the small mystery of Kane's last word and the larger mystery of the man who was capable of both integrity and corruption, and who seemed to have no sense of peace or happiness.
Kane is an avalanche of technical innovation, unmatched in any other Hollywood film. At the same time that he sets himself up as above the world, he longs for the affection of the common people. From the enchanting performances right down to the meticulously planned camera movements and clever lighting tricks, there isn't a single element of CITIZEN KANE that isn't a stunning achievement in all areas of filmmaking.
This review is the result of that screening. No problem -- there is time enough for them to study these aspects of Citizen Kane's brilliance if they decide to learn more about film history and criticism.
